Cheltenham is a town in Gloucestershire, England, home to the renowned Cheltenham Festival, 4 days of horse jump racing culminating in the Gold Cup, held annually in March at Cheltenham Racecourse. It's also known for Regency buildings, including the Pittville Pump Room, a remnant of Cheltenham’s past as a spa town. There's fine art at The Wilson museum, and the Victorian Everyman Theatre has an ornate auditorium.

Day 1 - Travel to Cheltenham

Day 2 - Travel to the delightful market town of Stow-on-the-Wold the vast Market Square testifies to the towns former importance. Continuing on we travel just 4 miles to Bourton-on-the-Water, which straddles the river Windrush with its series of elegant low bridges beside neat tree-shaded greens and tidy stone banks.

Day 3 - The hugely popular period drama Downton Abbey was set at Highclere Castle, the home of the Earl and Countess of Carnarvon. Enjoy the elegant castle interior, the magnificent State Rooms and the highly acclaimed Egyptology Exhibition, before a stroll through the gardens and spectacular parkland designed by Capability Brown.

Day 4 - Head for home.
